This poem responds directly to The New York Times article “What They Saved: Texans Reflect on Treasures Plucked from Hurricane Harvey” and The New York Times The Daily podcast both published on September 5, 2017. When the interviewer on the podcast asked Ms. Kris Ford-Amofa who returned to her home one week after Harvey if there was anything she was glad she found, she mentioned the VHS tape of her mother singing at church that was salvaged from the wreckage. It is the only reason she still had a VCR. I was really touched by the objects she and others were grateful to find— and that somehow they still provided a small bit of comfort after this catastrophic storm seemed nothing short of a gift.
